James Young is the hard rocking guitarist of the band Styx, and one of the band's original members. He played in several bands in Chicago, before signing on as a guitarist for the band TW4, which later became Styx.
On Styx's early albums, Young was the vocalist for most of the songs. Since most of Styx's songs were hard rock at the time, he was perfect as the vocalist. His gruff voice and appearance earned him the reputation that he still holds today. He played on all of Styx's albums from 1972 to 1984, and built up a huge following of fans.
When Styx disbanded in 1984, Young started on his solo career. His first solo album, City Slicker, was done with famed keyboardist Jan Hammer, who had played with other famed guitarists, including Neal Schon of Journey. The album was released on his own label, Waterdog Records, in Chicago. His second album, Out On A Day Pass, was released a few years later. Both were successful, but somewhat hard to obtain, since they were not released on a major label.
Young rejoined Styx for the "Edge Of The Century" album in 1990, then formed a new band, The James Young Group. He released the album Raised By Wolves in 1995 with his new band. Highlights included "Don't Get Mad" and "Heaven In Your Heart". He then worked with Styx on their two greatest hits releases and a second live album, "Return To Paradise". Styx's album "Brave New World" in 1998 would be the last to feature some of the band's original members.
Today, Young, along with bandmate Tommy Shaw, tours regularly with Styx and its new lineup, sharing the bill with other 70s AOR acts, including REO Speedwagon and Kansas. There are no plans for a new solo album from James Young or the James Young Group at this time.
